Christmas Tree Garland Pattern

Hello, all!  I hope you're staying safe wherever you are.  In my part of the world we're still dealing with a rising second wave of Covid cases, so I'm finding myself with a lot of free time (and yarn).  

The temperatures here in Canada are starting to drop, and the local stores have been full of Christmas decorations since before Halloween.  I've been seeing so many adorable Christmas and winter themed garlands, so I wanted to try making my own!

The trees can be sewn onto a garland, or left separate as a cute gift tag or tree ornament.

To make these you'll need:

• Green Yarn (I used Scheepjes Catona in colour numbers 412, 515, and 244)
• Dark brown yarn (same weight as the green yarn)
• Beige yarn (or any colour you want for the garland chain)
• A crochet hook to match your weight of yarn.  I used a 2.75mm hook.  If you use a thicker yarn, you might want a larger size
• A tapestry needle for weaving in your ends
• Green felt
• Hot glue gun
  
  
• Small led lights (optional)
• Gold thread (optional)

Abbreviations

• SC = single crochet
• BLO = back loop only
• INC = increase
• CH = chain
• FO = fasten off

The Pattern

Using either plain yarn, or yarn with gold thread held together

**At the start of each row (starting on Row 1), I began with a CH 1.  This helps transition you into the next row and shapes the tree a bit.  You can choose not to do this, but it won't look just like mine.  

Set up: CH 2, in 2nd CH from the hook SC 3 (3 stitches in row)

Row 1: SC, INC, SC (4 stitches in row)

Row 2: In BLO, SC across (4 stitches)

Row 3: SC, INC 2, SC  (6 stitches)

Row 4: In BLO, SC across

Row 5: SC 2, INC 2, SC 2 (8 stitches)

Row 6: In BLO, SC across

Row 7: SC 3, INC 2, SC 3 (10 stitches)

Row 8: In BLO, SC across

Row 9: SC 4, INC 2, SC 4 (12 stitches)

Row 10: In BLO, SC across

Row 11: SC 5, INC 2, SC 5 (14 stitches)

Row 12: In BLO, SC across

Row 13: SC 6, INC 2, SC 6 (16 stitches)

Row 14: In BLO, SC across

Row 15: SC 7, INC 2, SC 7 (18 stitches)

Row 16: In BLO, SC across

Row 17: SC across

FO

To add the trunk, count across 7 stitches from row 17, and attach brown yarn, crocheting 4 SC.  Turn, and crochet four more SC, FO

Weave in all ends but the thread at the top of the tree (you'll use this to sew it to your CH)

Make a crochet CH the length that you want your garland to be. I added a gold thread into mine, but you can also just use plain yarn.

Attach the trees using that leftover thread.  I spaced mine 5 inches apart. 

I found that my trees were curling at this point, so I cut out felt triangles slightly smaller than the trees and glued them to the backs.

Giant Blanket Tutorial

Hello all!  I haven't posted for a while, but I'm planning to change that in the next few months.

I've gotten many questions about how to make these blankets, so below you'll find both written and video instructions.

Materials:

8-9 Balls Bernat Blanket Big

Scissors

Abbreviations:

CH = Chain

Slst = Slip Stitch 

Written Instructions

Chain Row: 

As shown in the video, start by making a slip knot.  Then CH the number of stitches to get your desired length (I did 42 for a 68'' blanket).

Row 1: 

Starting in the 2nd CH from your hand, insert your fingers, grab your working yarn, and pull through both loops (the one on your hand, and the one you just put your fingers into.)  Repeat until the end of the row, being careful not to twist the yarn.

Row 2-end:

CH 1 to start the row.  You'll see two loops making up that row you just did.  You want to crochet in the back loops.  Those are the loops furthest away from you. (Watch video for guidance in this).  

Crochet to the end of the row, and repeat!  

* I realize that I never gave guidance in the video on how to start a new skein of yarn.  Once you come to the end of your ball, leave about 8 inches.  With the loop still on your hand as usual, insert your hand into the next stitch, and pull through yarn from your new ball instead (also leaving a 8 inch tail.)

You can then tie these together for extra durability, and weave all the ends in at the end - tucking and twisting them into your project so they can't be seen.  

Fastening off:

When you get to the end of your project, simply cut the yarn, leaving an 8 inch tail.  Pull the yarn through your loop, and pull tight - fastening off your work.
